49ers add Mario Manningham. Wow.
Holy shit.
Peyton or not, we’re a better team next year. We were thisclose to the Super Bowl, and now we’re better.
HOLY SHIT.
Look who jumped on the bandwagon on Sunday!
- My sister Alex, who is 18 and has made it clear she doesn’t give a shit about football.
- My sister Christina, who is a fucking Cowboy fan even though she grew up in NorCal with a family full of 49er fans.
- Christina’s boyfriend Hans, an army medic that just got back from a year in Afghanistan. I’m actually quite happy to have him on the bandwagon.
And, this.
Go Niners, forever and ever.
First, let’s get this out of the way: Yes, that was a tough loss to swallow. And the way that it happened was just heartbreaking.
But when I took a step back, and put things in perspective, I realized this: Six months ago, I wasn’t even sure there was going to be an NFL season. Even after the lockout ended, I had no idea what to expect in Harbaugh’s first year. I thought an eight or nine-win season was a possibility, and because our division was so shitty, maybe a ceiling of a one-and-done in the Wild Card round.
So if you had told me back then that the 49ers would go 13-3, beat the Saints in the playoffs and host an overtime NFC Championship Game, I would’ve thought you were insane. This team had a season that not a single person in this world, other than maybe Harbaugh himself, dreamed was possible.
Yeah, I was sad for a bit. But then I was just happy. For the first time in a long time, it feels great to be a 49er fan again. I can finally go into an offseason with hope and realistic expectations for next year. I can look forward to the draft as a chance to add pieces to a championship contender, rather than a frustrating exercise in possible futility.
Also, hey, you can’t appreciate the thrill of victory without the occasional crushing defeat, right?
Been thinking a lot lately about Ronnie Lott.
Related: I read this book a number of times between the ages of 11 and 16. Think it’s time to make that happen again.
God, I loved these uniforms. I mean, the current ones (and the classic 80s look from which they came) are just about perfection — but as a one-off, for just that year, those NFL 75th anniversary uniforms were damn awesome.
